Ghanaian long-distance athlete William Amponsah secured a silver medal in the Men’s Half Marathon Final at the ongoing 13th African Games, held at the University of Ghana (UG) Sports Stadium earlier today.
Amponsah’s impressive performance comes on the heels of breaking Ghana’s national record in the Men’s 10,000m event earlier in the African Games, where he clocked a time of 29:50.99 (finishing fifth).
He continued his momentum in the Half Marathon, clocking 1:05:13 and securing Ghana’s 24th silver medal of the competition and the nation’s first-ever medal in a marathon event at the Games. Eritrean runner Hailemicael Samsom Amare clinched the gold medal with a time of 1:05:04.
Ghana boasted double representation in the Men’s Half Marathon. Koogo Atia followed Amponsah across the finish line in 15th place, recording a time of 1:12:14. Angolan runner Kandumbo Jeremias Gabriel Hoque secured 14th place with a time of 1:11:40.
